Mercafarma is a pharmaceutical company operating in Guatemala that specializes in the import, distribution, and sale of pharmaceutical, medical, and dietary supplement products. The company plays a crucial role in providing access to high-quality healthcare products across Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador. To ensure product safety and efficacy in the region’s tropical climate, Mercafarma adheres to strict protocols for proper pharmaceutical storage conditions.

 

In Guatemala, the storage and handling of vaccines are regulated by the Ministry of Public Health and Social Assistance (MSPAS). These regulations aim to guarantee the safety and effectiveness of immunizations. The recently approved Vaccination Law, Decree Number 25-2024, underscores the importance of proper vaccine storage as a key element in strengthening the country’s immunization system.

These regulations align with international best practices for vaccine storage and handling, ensuring that vaccines administered in Guatemala remain safe and effective. Maintaining proper storage conditions, such as preserving the cold chain, is vital for retaining vaccine potency from production to administration.

PROBLEM TO SOLVE / TASK

Mercafarma was seeking a modern and reliable wireless monitoring system that, in addition to complying with regulations, would be quick and easy to install, allowing technicians to set it up and configure it independently.

The company aims to ensure proper storage conditions throughout the vaccine supply chain, prioritizing public health and safety.

SOLUTION

Mercafarma uses Efento Cloud to monitor temperature and humidity in its facilities.

Efento wireless BLE loggers measure environmental conditions and wirelessly transmit data to the Efento Gateway, which then sends it to the cloud-hosted platform, Efento Cloud. The system eliminates the need for users to own servers or employ IT staff for server maintenance and updates. The Efento team monitors and maintains the platform 24/7, ensuring seamless operation.

Key features of Efento Cloud for Mercafarma include push, SMS, and email notifications, storing and visualizing data collected by the sensors (e.g., as graphs or tables), and generating automated reports.
The data is stored on the cloud platform for 6 years.

Efento Cloud is a scalable and secure platform, designed to ensure the safety of user data. Regular updates and monitoring by the Efento team provide users with peace of mind. Additionally, data is continuously backed up at a geographically separate data center from the main servers, guaranteeing accessibility even in the event of disruptions.

 Moreover, the personnel has direct access to the measurements using a free Efento mobile application.

A hospital consists of thousands of processes, devices, and rooms whose proper functioning is essential for patient safety. One of these is ensuring proper storage conditions for medicines, vaccines, medical supplies, and laboratory samples.
Efento devices can also monitor gas and liquid pressure, water leaks, and visitor footfall.

Automated pressure warning systems
Pressure sensors are installed in water, oil, chemical, or compressed air pipelines for continuous pressure monitoring. In the event of a pressure issue, a PLC controller operates a pump or valve to immediately increase or decrease the pressure. However, most pressure sensors only provide control signals and lack alerting capabilities.
Differential Pressure Monitoring in Vietnam
The facility was originally equipped with analog differential pressure gauges, which did not allow for remote monitoring or automated record-keeping to document production conditions.
Is it necessary to archive reports from the Efento system?
Data from temperature loggers used in the storage and transport of vaccines must be kept for at least 5 years. In the case of the Efento system, measurement data from the loggers is stored for 6 years. To ensure that nothing is lost (e.g., due to a failure), it is simultaneously saved in two independent data centers (AWS servers).
