About our client
The University Medical Center Schleswig-Holstein (UKSH) in Kiel is one of the largest university hospitals in Germany. It serves as a major center for medical research, education, and patient care, affiliated with the University of Kiel. The facility offers a full range of medical specialties and is known for its state-of-the-art infrastructure, including advanced digital systems and innovation-driven projects. UKSH is a leader in integrating smart hospital technologies, such as real-time asset tracking and network automation, to enhance efficiency and patient outcomes.

PROBLEM TO SOLVE / TASK
In order to increase patient safety and reduce costs, the client was looking for a system that supports patient and equipment localization, climate monitoring, and logistics functions on a hospital campus.
SOLUTION
UKSH requested that Hypros prepare a suitable solution tailored to its needs.
In response, Hypros developed a system based on its digital platform for tracking hospital assets, utilizing Bluetooth beacons.
As part of the network project in Kiel, Zero Touch Provisioning (ZTP) was implemented on Aruba switches and access points, enabling rapid device deployment without the need for manual configuration.
BLE devices from Efento were integrated to monitor climate conditions such as temperature and humidity.
Comprehensive temperature monitoring to ensure cold chain compliance
Over 1,500 temperature sensors continuously monitor medication refrigerators at both UKSH locations. If predefined thresholds are exceeded, an automatic alert is triggered with location information—enabling responsible staff to respond immediately.
Previously, temperature checks were performed manually and occasionally by nursing staff. Now, temperatures are recorded 24/7—seamlessly and in a tamper-proof manner. In the event of irregularities, the entire temperature history can be displayed as a graph. Actions such as door openings or medication transfers must be commented on and logged—an essential requirement for audits.
Hypros GmbH, founded in 2016 and based in Lübeck, Germany, is a leading provider of scalable IoT and Real-Time Location System (RTLS) platforms tailored to the healthcare sector. Its core solution enables real-time tracking and monitoring of assets, patients, and environmental parameters across large hospital campuses.
