Guatemala - storing medicines in a tropical climate

About our client

Mercafarma is a pharmaceutical company operating in Guatemala, engaged in the import, distribution, and sale of pharmaceutical, medical, and dietary supplement products. Mercafarma plays an important role in providing access to high-quality healthcare products in Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador. The company ensures that pharmaceutical products are stored in the right conditions, which is essential in the tropical climate.

In Guatemala, vaccine storage and handling are governed by regulations established by the Ministry of Public Health and Social Assistance (MSPAS) to ensure the efficacy and safety of immunizations. The recently approved Vaccination Law, Decree Number 25-2024, emphasizes the importance of proper vaccine storage as part of strengthening the immunization system.
These regulations align with international best practices for vaccine storage and handling, ensuring that vaccines administered in Guatemala are safe and effective. Proper storage conditions, such as maintaining the cold chain, are crucial for preserving vaccine potency from the point of manufacture to administration.

PROBLEM TO SOLVE / TASK

Mercafarma was looking for a modern and reliable wireless monitoring system, which on top of being compliment with the regulations, would be quick and easy to install, so the technicians can install and configure it on their own.
Mercafarma wants to provide of maintaining proper storage conditions throughout the vaccine supply chain to ensure public health safety.

SOLUTION

Mercafarma use Efento Cloud to monitor temperature / humidity in the rooms.

Efento wireless sensors measure the environmental conditions and wirelessly send data to Efento Gateway, which transfers it to the cloud hosted platform – Efento Cloud.
The system does not require the user to own servers or employ IT staff capable of servers maintenance and updates – the platform is monitored and maintained 24/7 by Efento team.

The key Efento Cloud functions Mercafarm are  Push/  SMS / email notifications, storing and visualising the data gathered by the loggers (e.g. in the form of a graph or tables) and generating automatic reports.

Efento Cloud is a cloud based platform, what provides quick scalability, security and safety of the data.  The platform is updated and monitored by Efento team, what gives the customers and users peace of mind. The data is constantly backed up in a data centre in a different geographical location than the main servers, to ensure that it will always be available for the customers.

Moreover, the personnel has direct access to the measurements using a free Efento mobile application.

Free mobile app allows you to monitor temperature in real time and generate free alarms

Results

Mercafarm has solved the problem of temperature monitoring, obtaining operational reliability and data security.
Authorized people have access to current measurements from anywhere.

Particularly useful are the free “Push” alarms generated by using the mobile application – there is no need to use SMS
