Udometer – Efento pulse counter and precipitation sensor in Portugal

About our client

Ambimetric is a Portugal based company that develops and implements technical solutions for environmental monitoring. Their Automatic Weather Stations, which are designed for a wide range of applications, stand out in the field. Ambimetric designs and develops monitoring systems according to the applications and technical requirements of their clients. Their range of solutions also includes installation and technical training. Key companies values are: Professionalism, Dedication and Proficiency.

PROBLEM TO SOLVE / TASK

For one of their projects, Ambimetric wanted to develop a cloud connected rain gauge (udometer). The device had to be battery powered, easy and deploy and have the option to be moved around. One of the key requirements for the device was to periodically report its measurements to the cloud. The main reason for that was to address the most popular challenges associated with the rain gauges:

  • If not checked regularly, water in the gauge can evaporate, leading to lower recorded values. On the other hand, during heavy rain, some gauges might overflow or fail to capture the total amount of rainfall accurately.
  • Human error can occur when reading the measurement, especially with traditional gauges that require manual recording.
  • Rainfall can vary significantly over short distances. A single rain gauge provides data only for its specific location, which may not represent a larger area accurately.

Ambimetric wanted to develop an easy to install and reliable solution that would allow their customers to get the real time information about the rainfall in large areas.

SOLUTION

Ambimetric developed a solution based on Efento pulse counter and precipitation sensor (Senseca HD2015 Delta OHM). The measurements collected by the devices are periodically sent to the cloud platform over NB-IoT network. Thanks to the use of NB-IoT technology to send the data, the connectivity cost is reduced to minimum and battery life time of the device is long (up to 5 years of autonomy).

The data sent by the device are received and processed by Ambimetric’s own cloud platform, tailored to the environmental monitoring requirements – AmbiDSCloud. The platform can be accessed from anywhere, via computer or mobile phone and offers a variety of features, from graphical visualisations over configurable periods to customisable PDF or CSV reports. Moreover, the platform allows to configure alerts for station operation and receive notifications by e-mail or SMS for efficient and proactive  management.

Storage Capacity: 40,000 measurements. Once the maximum is reached,  the oldest measurements are overwritten.

Results

The solution developed by Ambimetric allows their customers to monitor rainfall in real time. The device is easy to install and maintain, without large expenditure the users can quickly increase the density of the installation in order to conduct accurate rainfall measurements. This solution can be used by:

  • Meteorologists: To gather data on precipitation for weather forecasting and climate studies.
  • Agriculturists and Farmers: To monitor rainfall for crop irrigation and to optimize water usage
  • Hydrologists: To study water cycle components, manage water resources, and predict floods.
  • Environmental Scientists: To assess the impact of precipitation on ecosystems and biodiversity.
  • Water Management Authorities: To manage reservoirs, rivers, and flood control systems.
  • Urban Planners: To design effective drainage systems and manage stormwater.
  • Researchers: In fields such as climatology, ecology, and geography for various studies related to precipitation.
